Talk on Academic Excellence for Parents

ree

On the 25th of August, I had the honour of being invited by my highly esteemed mentors, Pastors Tunde and Kemi Kikiowo, the host pastors of RCCG House of Love, Coventry, to speak at their online event aimed at enlightening immigrant parents and families on the peculiarities of the UK education system—and how to raise academic aspirations for their children.

Many families have emigrated from Africa, Asia, and Europe to the UK with hopes of providing a better life, education, and future for their children. However, raising children in a new country can come with unique challenges. The education system is different, expectations can be unfamiliar, and often, parents find themselves navigating two very different cultures at once. The good news is with the right information and intentional support, children can thrive academically and in every aspect of life.

During the 2-hour session, we:

  • Explored the roadmap of the UK education system

  • Discussed practical strategies to support children’s learning journeys and help them reach their full potential

  • Highlighted the importance of building strong, positive relationships with schools

  • Shared a list of common ‘jargon’ terms used in UK education

  • Provided helpful resources to guide children preparing for the 11+ grammar school entrance exams

To conclude, Pastor Kemi led a powerful time of ‘Back to School’ prayers for families, reminding us that while the journey can be challenging, we are not alone—there is strength for the journey as we rely on our faith in God.

It was truly a privilege to contribute to this important conversation, and I remain passionate about equipping parents with the knowledge and tools they need to empower their children to succeed.
